Prayer

Read Ephesians 1:3-14

Sometimes a prayer gets out of hand. That’s what happens what Paul starts talking about all the things God has already done for us in Eph. 1:3-14. Our English translations break this passage up into multiple sentences, but in the Greek it’s one long sentence. Forget about trying to diagram it. Paul apparently loses sight of the rules of proper sentence construction in the dazzling light of God’s glorious activity.

In this monster run-on, Paul gushes about how God has blessed us, chosen us, predestined us, adopted us, given to us, redeemed us, forgiven us, made known his will to us, included us, and marked us with the Holy Spirit.

It’s easy to pray for things we hope God will do for us in the future, but sometimes it’s best to start by praising God for all the things he’s already done.

It’s also easy to neglect prayer because of all the things we have to get done to keep our projects moving forward. In this passage, Paul reminds us that our ministry isn’t built on what we can get done, but on what God has already done for us in Jesus—to the praise of this glory.
